Academic History and Medical Education

Dr. Mbabuike began his academic career at the renowned accelerated combined B.S./M.D. program at The Sophie Davis School of Medicine at City College of New York (now CUNY School of Medicine). This necessitated deciding as a senior in high school to enroll in college to study medicine after graduating from high school.

The Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program at the Cuny School of Medicine intends to aid high-achieving high school students in pursuing an accelerated curriculum to address shortages in the medical business, especially among minority students.

Entrance to this program requires careful consideration of high school grades in relevant subjects, particularly junior-year science courses, math scores, and communication abilities. Also, the program evaluates volunteers and personality traits, such as maturity, compassion, and drive. The rigorous admissions system requires results on standardized tests, a high GPA, three essays, and five letters of reference.

Jack Mbabuike was selected as one of the 50 to 60 students accepted to the program annually due to his excellence in these areas. This degree qualified him for a combined seven-year bachelor of science and doctor of medicine program. Dr. Mbabuike completed his undergraduate studies at City College of New York three years before enrolling in the Grossman School of Medicine at New York University, where he earned his M.D.

Professional History

Dr. Mbabuike pursued surgical training at many major New York City hospitals after graduating from the NYU School of Medicine, including New York Presbyterian Cornell, Westchester Medical Center, Lenox Hill, and Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Dr. Mbabuike was well-trained in both general surgery and orthopedic surgery. During this time, he obtained rigorous and extensive clinical experience while engaging in and publishing groundbreaking and novel research.

The present emphasis of Dr. Mbabuike is on the holistic treatment of pain, particularly chronic pain such as severe arthritis. Jack Mbabuike is diversifying his practice to include aesthetic medicine to remain innovative and in touch with the ever-changing needs of medicine. Like pain management, Dr. Mbabuike can focus on personalized regimens for each patient to attain the highest patient satisfaction. Dr. Mbabuike's foray into this new discipline has allowed him to continue to challenge himself professionally while fostering a spirit of lifelong learning.

Jack Mbabuike is a first-generation Nigerian-American, born and raised in New York City, and one of the few African men in the medical field. Hence, Dr. Mbabuike has always had a sense of obligation and a strong desire to make travel easier and more frequent for individuals in his position. He thinks that mentorship is a crucial equalizer in bringing young Black males like himself into the medical field. Dr. Mbabuike's objective is to provide a blueprint for succeeding and thriving in the medical sector and construct a pipeline into the area that will outlast his presence.

African men comprised 3.1% of the nation's medical student population in 1978 but just 2.9% of students in 2019.

In 1978, Black males comprised 3.1% of the national medical student population; in 2019, that number decreased to 2.9%, with historically Black colleges and universities accounting for 0.5%.

Jack Mbabuike and a handful of other Black male physicians, concerned about the future of Black men in medicine, founded the Black Male Initiative, or BMI, an organization committed to elevating and mentoring African guys in medicine. The club strives to unite students and Black men in the workforce to network, share knowledge, and address problems in the workplace.

With these programs, the group anticipates that more Black men will attend medical school and succeed in their careers. Dr. Mbabuike is inspired by the goal to increase justice and equality in medicine to undertake this vital endeavor.

Personal pastimes and pursuits

Dr. Mbabuike's occupation and dedication to BMI consume most of his time, although he does have a few hobbies. He has a passion for sports and an active lifestyle. Dr. Mbabuike participated in recreational basketball leagues for over 12 years before the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020.

As he no longer participates in recreational leagues, he exercises and watches professional sports more. His favorite teams are the New York Knicks, the New York Giants, and LeBron James. Also, Jack Mbabuike likes high-intensity exercises, weight training, and his favorite at-home pastime, peloton platform spinning sessions.

To maintain an active lifestyle, Dr. Mbabuike enjoys visiting new locations, learning new languages, and experiencing new cultures.

In addition to cinema and theater, he enjoys New York City's broad and varied offers.
